[MedicalConspiracies] Skunk spray solution

Sender: daisy53@frontiernet.net

There have recently been a large number of dogs/cats being sprayed by skunks in our area so I thought I'd share an amazing recipe for a solution that kills the smell completely, removing the thiol oil from the fur, unlike those that simply mask it temporarily.
Do NOT get the dog wet first!

Skunk spray solution-
1qt 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
1 Cup Baking soda (one says 1 Cup the other site said 1/4 cup) I used 1Cup
1 tsp Dawn or liquid dishsoap (NOT dishwasher detergent!)
(OR 1Tbls liquid dishsoap) I've read both but used a little over 1 tsp myself and it worked.

Mix ingredients, stirring until baking soda is disolved, and use immediately.  Using a rag or sponge slather mixture on pet including wiping inside it's mouth but being careful not to get into eyes.  Let soak for 10 minutes then wash and repeat if necessary on any areas missed the first time.  Give the dog a bath using regular dog shampoo as this does dry out the skin.

Be ready for massive amounts of fizzing bubbles when you mix this - using a large bucket is the best idea since that gives it plenty of room to bubble without spilling over.

Do NOT store in a sealed container it will explode!!

It's important to use a dishwashing soap that's known for cutting grease as this is what cuts the thiol oils that cause it to last such a long time on whatever has been sprayed.  Skunk oil can last a month though one website I read from says it can last up to TWO YEARS if it's a direct spray close-up!  So you must act quickly and it's especially important to get it off before they get wet and before it dries which only sets it into the fur and skin making it nearly impossible to get off.  Act quickly!!!

Be sure to wear OLD CLOTHES - you WILL get it on you and you don't want to ruin your favorite jeans and t-shirt!  We also used latex gloves so it wouldn't be on our hands and a clothes pin on the nose really does help a LOT! ;o)

Our poor dog got sprayed so heavily it was dripping off her face and neck and I was actually afraid she'd go blind.  Her eyes turned a foggy white rimmed by whites that were blood-red and painful looking - and the look on her face was that of desperation.  She threw up twice so it can make them ill and though it isn't harmful the smell is so horribly strong just that alone can make them quite ill and yes, it can cause blindness. :o(  It blinds the target temporarily up to two days even with a mild spray in the eyes from a distance.
Thiols are the same oil that are in onions that make us cry when we cut them so you can imagine how horrible it would be to get that concentrated oil sprayed into your eyes at a dose something like 500 times the strength found in one onion...

I'd heard of using tomato juice but have looked into it further and have read the factory canned tomato juice is all but useless.  One gal told me she'd used home-canned tomato juice and that it really did work well on her cat.

The solution above however truly worked 100% on all areas of the dog.  In fact she didn't smell at all that very same night right after she'd been bathed in this solution and I'd have felt quite comfortable having her sleep in my bed it worked so well!!!  Amazing stuff! :o)

Please, put this on a card and tape it inside your kitchen cupboard or wherever you keep emergency information - you'll be thankful you did when your pet comes in sprayed and you can't even think straight!  The smell is so horrible & soooooo strong!!!  It made me sicker than sick within just a few minutes of her coming in the house - and I mean worse than stomach flu.  When it's a bad hit and they're drenched your house will become like a fog bank of horrendous odor and your mind races, as does your heart, wondering what to do and how to do it so be prepared ahead of time.

Here's a couple of websites I gleaned this information from just to give them credit! ;o)
