| You can Stop this Genetic Terror.
Dear friends, They say you are what you eat. If we believe this, soon we will all be a bag of toxins. Yes! But only if we sit back and let someone else make decisions for us. It's time we made our voices heard and say NO to dangerous, untested, genetically modified (GM) food!
Last year you forced Environment Minister, Mr. Jairam Ramesh, to stall the approval for Bt Brinjal. Had the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) had its way, your plates would have been full of potentially dangerous GM vegetables. But together we stopped them until now. The issue is now open to public consultation which will take place in 7 cities across the country. The time has come to stand up for our food security.
GM crops like Bt Brinjal pose a grave threat to the health of humans and that of the environment. What is also at stake is the livelihood of several millions of farmers and the future of the king of vegetables, as seed companies take control of our brinjal through genetic modification. The GM seed companies are the only ones who would profit from this technology.
Now is the time to tell Mr Ramesh exactly what you want on your menu. Bt Brinjal is a genetic timebomb waiting to explode! We have to stop it forever. Mr Ramesh needs to hear from you exactly how you feel about the proposed entry of GM food, rich in life harming substances, into your diet. Greenpeace will be taking your message to the public consultations in each city, so leave a message now.
There is more that you can do to further this fight against the BT Brinjals. You can observe a hunger fast with several other citizens on January 30th 2010 across India. On Mahatma Gandhi's death anniversary, we will use his method to get our message across to the leaders. Join the movement. Stop them from messing up with your food.
Let's protect our Baingan from genetic junk!
Thanks for your support!
 Jai Krishna Greenpeace India
PS: We need to tell the Minister that we will not stand for contamination of our food! Please forward this mail to all your friends and family, get them involved as well!
| Know More
- Bt Brinjal is created by inserting the gene of a bacteria into brinjal
- The Bt gene causes the Bt Brinjal to produce toxins
- There are no existing studies that prove that Bt Brinjal is safe for human consumption
- Rats fed on Bt Brinjal had diarrhoea and liver weight decrease
- If Bt Brinjal is grown in open fields it could contaminate non-Bt Brinjal farms as well, thus contaminating our food supply forever
