By Mail Foreign Service France used its servicemen as human guinea pigs to test the effects of radiation exposure, it was claimed yesterday. Le Parisien said that in April 1961, about 300 soldiers were sent into areas of Algeria where atomic devices had been set off. Quoting from a government report, it said the aim was to study 'the physical and psychological effect of atomic weapons on humans'. Exposed: Dummies are used in this French nuclear explosion test in Algeria in 1960. A defence document says soldiers were also exposed to radiation Defence Minister Herve Morin told the newspaper he had no knowledge of the report. He said: 'The (radioactive) dosages received during the tests were very low.' Some veterans who worked on the experiments in Algeria, and subsequent tests on French Polynesian atolls, have said they were ordered to lie down and cover their eyes during the explosions, wearing nothing but shorts and t-shirts. The newspaper reported that around 300 soldiers participated in the 1961 test and that patrols were ordered to enter the affected area right after the explosion and head for the point where the device was set off. 'A patrol of cross-country vehicles was ordered to carry out a raid on point zero to study the possibility of attack in a contaminated zone,' it said. France ran nuclear tests in French Polynesia between 1966 and 1996. Several veterans have said they were told to sail into affected areas immediately after the blast to examine the impact. ===================== the French pretend to be more enlightened but they can not explain the Vichy they can not explain their air burst nuke tests, the sinking of the Greenpeace boat , or the dumping of their nuclear waste all over Africa and their own abuse of their old colonies and so this is no surprise Nations and their Dr Strangeloves abuse their own regularly - that is the real danger to secrecy and HSD's and "national security' umbrellas Read this tragedy and wonder - they could ask for and compensate volunteers and compensate those accidentally abused or exposed Why do the elite and desk jockey in uniform and politics never use their own kids and grandkids as fodder ? Today, look around the globe - very few leaders have ever served and we have institutionalized arrogance in officer academies that produce 'leaders' who have never served or been under fire or sacrificed ? that is a good 'leader' ? think about it French troops used as 'nuclear guinea pigs' in the 1960s
