WE CARE FILM FESTIVAL ON DISABILITY ISSUES 2010
Travelling to 12 venues across India
A total of 32 short features and documentaries from India and overseas have been selected for screening in this year's We Care Film Festivals on Disability Issues being held in different parts of the country as a traveling festival over the next few months.
The films were selected from just over fifty entries received on various issues of disability from different countries including India.
Each of the films selected by a Preview Committee has a story to tell, tales of dogged human spirit that has triumphed against all odds. The members of the Committee headed by Marwah Studio President Sandeep Marwah -President We Care Filmfest 2010 were Senior Media Consultant and Film Critic B B Nagpal, Mr. Shankar Choudhary (Senior Programme Offricer, UNESCO), Ms. Saoirse (United Nations Volunteer, UNESCO), Media Professional and filmmaker Sanjeev Upadhyay, Ms. Deepa Jain (Psychologist and filmmaker), Ms. Gopa Mukherjee (Journalist and Filmmaker), and Mr. Abhinav, (Head IT, AAFT).
According to founder Director - We Care filmfest Satish Kapoor, "a world that truly embraces diversity is one where the rights, dignity, and well-being of individuals are realized regardless of differences in race, faith, gender - or ability. People living with disabilities often surprise us with their abilities, with what they can do rather than what they cannot do, but not many tell their stories."
The 7th We Care Filmfest will take the viewers into the lives of these people through festivals to be held across the country under the theme Dignity and Justice for All. Organized by Brotherhood in association with the National Trust, Asian Academy of Film and Television (AAFT), United Nations Information Centre for India and Bhutan (UNIC), and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Festival will travel to about 12 locations in India from February to mid-April 2010.
The venues confirmed until now are:

May 2010
IIC Main Auditorium, India International Centre, New Delhi (3 May), coinciding with the third anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities adopted on 3 May 2008 to which India is also a signatory. The function will include the awards ceremony, and release of DVDs/VCDs of the films.
These events are being organized by students of mass communications, journalism and filmmaking institutes, and governmental and non-governmental organizations working in the disability sector will be invited to the festivals.
Participatory Rating Process
For the last three years, a unique participatory rating process has been introduced where the audience rates each film and an independent jury judges the films on the basis of these ratings. This approach goes a long way in familiarizing audiences, especially students, with people living with disabilities, and at the same time encourages filmmakers to tell their stories.
By introducing this practice, it was found that "learning while rating" is the most powerful practice to sensitize the audience and specially students towards various issues of disability.
Mr Kapoor says the Festival 'is an opportunity for all students to develop their understanding and perspectives relating to disability issues besides contributing to the process of participatory rating. This will help the students whenever they plan to make short films/documentaries on disability. And the general audience will be sensitized on various issues of disability.'
Mr. Shankar Chowdhary said, "UNESCO is happy join hands with the We Care Filmfest as co-organizer and will promoting the festival throughout the SAARC region and as well as through its partner organizations. UNESCO is planning to take this festival to their SAARC countries from next years."
According to Mr Sandeep Marwah, 'The festival reflects the power of visuals on human perception. Through its selection of documentaries, the event aims to use the visual medium as a tool to advocate attitudinal and behavioural changes, promote the inclusion of people with disabilities, and rid people of the various misconceptions, myths and prejudices surrounding disability issues.'
Adds B B Nagpal: 'In India, there is need for initiatives that remove misconceptions about persons with disabilities. This film festival on disabilities is not just as an eye-opener but also helps empower and inspire people with disabilities, on and off celluloid. The aim is not merely to create awareness about disability and foster integration, but also to promote a new approach to disability which guarantees people living with disabilities the equal rights and opportunities they are legally entitled to.'
About the organizers
Brotherhood
Brotherhood has pioneered the We Care Filmfest on Disability issues in India since its inception in 2003, and renowned actor cum social activist Nandita Das is among those who first conceptualized the event. The organization has been working towards mainstreaming disability issues since 1994 through the screening of films, filmmaking workshops for persons with disabilities, scriptwriting workshops for those with visual impairments, and more. Activities involve children with disabilities and those without, with a view to shedding light on the similarities and not the differences between them.
The National Trust
The success of this film festival is also due to the continuing support of the National Trust which has been contributing the awards for the best films in various categories.
Asian Academy of Film and Television (AAFT)
The AAFT is responsible for the high quality of each screening. It has been providing the festival with technical support for over six years now, and continues to promote it nationally and internationally through various media.
UN Information Centre for India and Bhutan (UNIC)
UNIC got associated with We Care Filmfest in August 2008 during the awards ceremony of the 5th edition and co-organized the 6th We Care Filmfest and promoted it worldwide through the UN network. As a result, the Filmfest received about 50 short films and documentaries from across the world, including Canada, France, Iran, Israel, the Philippines, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States. More than half of them were specially produced for the festival.
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
This year, UNESCO has become a co-organizer and is promoting the festival throughout the SAARC region and as well as through its partner organizations.
