FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE - YOUR WEEKLY SECURITY UPDATE FROM TRENDLABS

Fake POS devices on sale online â€" a very real danger

Nowadays, as hardware has become cheap and accessible, cybercriminals are able to reproduce items such as point-of-sale (POS) devices for their own nefarious gains. In one underground forum, a certain ‘Nikkon’ has offered for sale a fake POS device with flash memory that could be used to skim data from debit and credit cards.

Looks can be deceiving - and costly

The fake device looks identical to a regular POS terminal. But when used, it prints out a default receipt informing the victim that an error has occurred and the transaction could not be completed. But whilst printing, the data held in the magnetic strip â€" and the victim’s personal identification number (PIN) - are saved to the onboard flash memory.

Only when your next statement arrives will you discover that your credit card information has been stolen

How would this work in the real world?

Quite easily. Imagine you are in a restaurant, shop, or café, and would like to pay using your credit or debit card. You are handed a POS device and asked to swipe your card and enter your PIN code. Moments later, you see that the card is being rejected. You are handed back a receipt as proof and might dismiss this as a normal failed transaction. Only when your next statement arrives will you discover that your credit card information has been stolen.

The initial price of a fake POS device is set at €1,000. An additional €200 EUR is charged for its setup and delivery. In addition, 40% of the stolen credit/debit card information is taken as usage fee by the seller.
