In the latest of a string of mass animal deaths,10,000 cows and buffalo have died in Vietnam.

Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development confirmed that more than 10,000 cows and buffalos died nationwide. The deaths are being blamed on harsh weather conditions. According to WSBT News:

The government is attributing this death to the exceptionally cold winter, however, and not to any of the swirling theories explaining other recent instances of animal deaths.

An article at NaturalNews.com is reporting that cattle have survived much colder conditions in other parts of the world, “raising troubling questions for why exactly the Vietnamese cows are dying off.”

Vietnam has had a particularly intense winter. Several people recently died this winter in central Vietnam. At least three people in the central provinces of Quang Tri and Phu Yen died from gas poisoning while they were warming themselves by burning coal. Four others in Quang Nam died from infections induced by the cold weather.

Throughout the northern region, high mountainous areas have reported deep freezes. The temperature in Sa Pa was expected to drop from the current -0.5 degrees Celsius to the record low of below -2 degrees Celsius.

Lower mountainous areas have all reported temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius.

The northern mountainous province of Cao Bang was hardest hit in the cattle deaths; with 2,260 dead cattle, per Thanh Nien News. Some have said the number of total dead cattle may be as high as 13,000.

Between 150-200 people arrive every day asking to be examined for respiratory or heart conditions.

The hospital is treating more than 300 children with cold-related illness such as pneumonia. According to Dr. Hung, the hospital has admitted nearly 50 ill newborn babies.
