Cancer cells wreak havoc in the body. They proliferate and spread, damaging other cells. But what makes a tumor grow? And what can be done to stop it?

In order to grow, cancer cells need nourishment. So they take it from healthy cells. If you stop the feeding fest, you kill the cancer.
One way to do so is with a natural antioxidant found in almonds, wheat germ, fish oil, and sunflower seeds. It stops cells from aging… rejuvenates the body… and robs cancer cells of nutrients they need to grow.
Dr. Michael P. Lisanti is chair of the Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine at Jefferson Medical College. He's a world-renowned cancer expert and a member of the Kimmel Cancer Center.
Dr. Lisanti led a team of researchers in a recent study. They looked at the mechanism cancer cells use to fuel their growth. Their findings appeared in the journal Cell Cycle.
Cancer's Sweet Tooth
Dr. Lisanti's team analyzed connective tissue from breast cancer patients. They discovered a transportation system that supplies cancer cells with the "food" they need.
The food is lactate. It's a sugar produced when cancer cells cause surrounding cells to become inflamed. The process is initiated by oxidation.
To get the food, the cancer cells trigger a "lactate shuttle." It moves the lactate from the normal cells to the cancer cells. The feeding mechanism is known as mono-carboxylate transporters (MCT1 and MCT4).
Why a Small Handful of Almonds Each Day Can Fight Cancer
"If lethal cancer is a disease of accelerated aging in the tumor's connective tissue," Dr. Lisanti said, "then cancer patients may benefit from therapy with strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory drugs. Antioxidant therapy will cut off the fuel supply for cancer cells."
So what is one antioxidant that can starve cancer to death? Vitamin E.
Vitamin E fights free radicals in your body. And it prevents oxidative stress. It does this by working with other nutrients, like vitamin C, glutathione, selenium, and vitamin B3.
Vitamin E has been called the "lightning rod" of the cell. That's because it allows free-radical molecules to strike the cell without causing damage.
Many studies prove that vitamin E is a cancer killer. Two were presented to the American Association of Cancer Research. The first was conducted at the National Cancer Institute. Researchers looked at 300 men. One hundred of them had prostate cancer. Those with the highest vitamin E levels were least likely to have cancer.
The second study was conducted at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and Texas Woman's University. Half of the participants had bladder cancer. And those with the highest consumption of vitamin E were least likely to have the disease.
All that separated that group from the others was a vitamin E-rich daily serving of spinach or a handful of almonds. A small distinction. But it made a big difference.
